FAMILY READING DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM TO
PROMOTE SINGING SWINGING FAMILY FUN TOUR
Santa Ana, CA – January 18, 2008
Family Reading Inc. announced today that it will be sponsoring an eight stop family concert tour featuring bilingual
entertainer and reading expert, Dr. Lee Brose and his assistant, Candy the pink dancing gorilla. The purpose of this
tour is three fold.
First, to raise awareness among children and families of the importance of developing strong reading skills at an early
age. Dr. Willard R. Daggett, of the International Center for Leadership in Education writes, “Reading is the key
enabler of learning for academic proficiency across all subject areas and over all grades. If students cannot read, they
are hamstrung in all other academic areas, including math and science. They cannot deal with advanced course work or
pursue lifelong learning. While humans are “hard-wired” for oral language, reading must be taught and learned. And,
the process must continue into the middle grades, high school, and beyond.” Dr. Daggett adds that “both graduates
and dropouts with poor reading and literacy skills are statistically:
• less likely to find employment, even in low-paying jobs
• more likely to have jobs that do not pay well enough to allow the wage earner to support a family
• more likely to require public assistance
• more likely to serve time in a correctional facility.”
The second purpose of the tour is to inspire the families, children, schools, businesses and other organizations of
Orange County to initiate a program such as the one described below:
Raising a Reader is a nonprofit and supporting organization of Peninsula Community Foundation, a community
association located in San Mateo, California. The Raising a Reader mission is to foster healthy brain development,
parent–child bonding, and early literacy skills critical for school success by engaging parents in a routine of daily
“book cuddling” with their children from birth through age 5. Raising a Reader is based on the premise that when
parents establish a reading routine with their children, family bonding time increases, as do children’s vocabulary and
pre-literacy skills.
Raising a Reader has spread to libraries, child care centers, Head Start programs, teen mother programs, and home
visiting nurse programs in 72 communities, 24 states, Mexico, Botswana, and Malaysia. Six independent evaluations
show that Raising a Reader significantly improves family reading behavior and kindergarten readiness, especially for
low-income, non-English speaking families. Raising a Reader has been shown to increase the amount of time parents
spend reading with their children, the number of visits parents and children take to the library, and an increase in
kindergarten readiness, skill of book knowledge, story comprehension and print knowledge.
And finally, Family Reading Inc. is providing this service to offer the Orange County community an opportunity to
enjoy a wholesome family fun musical show. Some shows will be held at a participating local library. Dr. Lee Brose’
first show will be performed at the Santa Ana Zoo on February 9, at 12:00 noon.
Family Reading Inc. was founded in 2007 by former school teacher Seth Sherwood. One day in class during “silent
sustained reading” SSR, five students told him that they hated reading. One girl stated, “I would rather go to the
dentist than read.” Seth realized how important it is for children to begin the reading process at home at an early age
so that reading would not be such an arduous assignment. The family reading development program reaches out to
any and all families who want their children to excel in reading and be outstanding students in school and in life. Seth
is the Executive Director of the organization which relies on donations, grants and business sponsors for funding.
The mission of Family Reading Inc. is to help families develop and maintain strong reading habits.
